Mail Drop Box Found Unsecured Near Area Where Letter Carrier Was Robbed

Oak Lawn cops say it's unknown if two incidents are linked.

OAK LAWN, IL -- Oak Lawn police are notifying residents of a U.S. Postal Service blue mail drop box that was founded unsecured on Nov. 22.

The mail drop box was found near 99th Street and 52nd Avenue, in the same area where a letter carrier was was robbedat knife point last week. Police are telling residents to exercise caution when using the drop boxes. Items with personal financial information, such as checks, cash, gift cards or credit card information should be dropped at the local post office (9249 S Cicero Ave, Oak Lawn) or directly to your postal carrier.

If you see suspicious persons lurking near a blue mail drop box, call 911 immediately. Oak Lawn police do know if the unsecured box is related to last week’s robbery of a letter carrier.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Center said no mail was stolen from the letter carrier in the Nov. 14 robbery.
