OAK LAWN, IL — The traditional Memorial Day opening of Oak Lawn Park District pools and splash pads has been delayed this year due to health and safety concerns surrounding the coronavirus pandemic. Swimming lessons and pool exercise classes are also postponed until further notice.

It’s not known if pools will open later this summer under phase 4 of Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s “Restore Illinois” plan.

“We are still waiting for direction from the governor and Illinois Department of Public Health,” pool director Mary Crout said. “If we are allowed we will follow their guidelines and will open.”

Meanwhile, the park district is cultivating a waiting list for patrons interested in swimming lessons. Payment is not due until classes open, and spaces will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Fees will also be waived for other summer classes and activities offered by the Oak Lawn Park District, with payment due when or if classes are allowed to open.

The park district operates two aquatic facilities: Central Pool, 9400 S. Kenton Ave. and Centennial Aquatic Center, 94th Street and Nashville Avenue. Splash pads are also available at Manor Park (102nd Street and Major Avenue); Sullivan Park (99th Street and Kostner Avenue); and Philips Park (53rd Court and Alexander Avenue).
