Memorial Day Weekend DUI Crackdown Nets Dozens of Violators

Oak Lawn police post results of Memorial Day weekend DUI and seat belt enforcement patrols.

Oak Lawn, IL, June 5, 2016 -- The Oak Lawn Police Department pulled over more than 133 drivers during its Memorial Day crackdown on drunk drivers and sea tbelt violators.

Police stopped and arrested 16 drunk drivers. Also 117 seat belt protection violations and numerous other citations were issued for various traffic infractions.

The police were out in force from May 16 to May 30.

. “We warned partygoers not to drink and drive, and we backed it up with aggressive enforcement,” said Sgt. M. Acke, OLPD traffic supervisor. “These offenders needed to realize their actions have serious and potentially fatal consequences, and hopefully, now that they have been arrested, they will not put themselves and others at risk by driving drunk again.” “

The recent law enforcement crackdown was funded by federal traffic safety funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation and is part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket.

Oak Lawn police say they will be running similar patrols in the days leading up to the July 4th and Labor Day holidays.
