More Violent Crime Reported in Oak Lawn: FBI Report

The FBI has released the 2014 Unified Crime Report.

The FBI recently released its annual ”Crime in the United States” report, which includes information about Oak Lawn.

According to the report, Oak Lawn saw 90 violent crimes in 2014. Violent crime includes offenses involving force or the threat of force: murder and non-negligent manslaughter, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, according to the FBI. The 2014 unified crime report shows a 10 percent increase in violent crime from 2013.

Of those violent crimes in 2014, there were three murders, 12 rapes, 34 robberies and 41 aggravated assaults. Compared to 2013, Oak Lawn saw 81 violent crimes including one murder, six rapes, 30 robberies and 44 aggravated assaults.

The homicides recorded in February 2014 were domestic-related, when a man shot his parents and 5-year-old nephew to death after a birthday celebration. The man set the house on fire and then killed himself.

Other 2014 crime stats for include 1,011 property crimes, 121 burglaries and 857 reports of larceny/theft. Also, there were 33 motor vehicle thefts and six arsons.

In 2013, there were 617 larceny/thefts, 62 burglaries, ten cases of motor vehicle theft, and one arson.

Nationally, violent crime decreased nationally last year by 0.2 percent from 2013, according to the report.
