The Associated Press has declared Marie Newman the projected winner of the Democratic primary in a Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District, beating the 8-term incumbent Dan Lipinski. With 95 percent of the district’s precincts reporting, Newman was leading Lipinski by 3,808 votes (48% to 44%). Vote totals still need to be certified.

“What a journey. I am bursting with pride and gratitude for the amazing coalition who helped bring about much-needed change in our district,” Newman said in a written statement. “We are going to work together to lower healthcare costs, to fight climate change, and to continue building a hospitable community for everyone, no matter where you come from.”

Newman came within striking distance two years ago of grabbing the IL-03 Democratic primary. A victory was almost assured as Lipinski faced self-avowed neo-Nazi Art Jones, who was the sole Republican primary candidate, in the November 2018 election.

In the final weeks of a 4-way primary when the new coronavirus became more widespread throughout Illinois, Newman mobilized a “virtual” campaign. Her team logged over 125,000 phone calls and texts to voters.

As far as Lipinski is concerned, the fat lady is still sitting backstage smoking a cigarette while patting her face with powder. He hasn’t conceded yet. Lipinski sent out a statement thanking voters for their support.

“[T]here are still votes to be counted in this race,” Lipinski said. “It is very close. We may have to wait overnight or into the morning for the final vote count. I want to thank everyone for their support. Please stay safe and take of yourselves and your families."

Lipinski’s campaign spokeswoman Sally Daly said the congressman was waiting for absentee ballots to be counted from Chicago voters.

Newman will face Will County Commissioner Mike Fricilone who was declared the unofficial winner in the IL-03 GOP primary.
