Oak Lawn Cops Stepping Up DUI Patrols Through Memorial Day

"You'll see us making lots of stops during this highly visible enforcement period ...," police say.

Oak Lawn, IL, May 19, 2016 -- Partiers be warned: Oak Lawn police will be cracking down more than usual on seat belt violators, texters and impaired drivers from now until May 30.

The Oak Lawn Police Department is participating in the annual Illinois “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” crackdown on drunk drivers during the Memorial Day holiday. Police will be conducting high-visibility and seat belt patrols. Anyone caught driving drunk will be arrested; front and back seat belt law violators will also be ticketed.

“You’ll see us making lots of stops during this highly visible enforcement period and our officers will show zero tolerance for drunk driving,” said Sgt. Michael Acke.

Data shows that holidays are a particularly deadly time due to the increased number of drunk drivers on the roads, and the Oak Lawn Police are prepared to stop and arrest any drunk driver they see to keep roads safe.

“We are going to keep our roads safe for the community and travelers heading to visit friends and family,” said Sgt. Acke. “This holiday, we will show zero tolerance for drunk drivers on the road. If you choose to drive drunk, we will see you, we will stop you and we will arrest you.”

Drivers arrested while driving drunk may face jail time, loss of their driver’s license, and steep financial costs such as higher insurance rates, attorney fees, court costs, lost time at work, and even job loss.

“Driving drunk is simply not worth the risk,” Sgt. Acke said. “So don’t take the chance. Remember, we will be out in force and we will be watching.”

“‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” is funded by federal traffic safety funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation.
