Oak Lawn Firefighter Overcome By Heat Fighting Garage Fire

Oak Lawn firefighters quickly extinguished a garage fire on the Fourth of July where a firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion.

OAK LAWN, IL -- An Oak Lawn firefighter was treated for heat related symptoms at the scene of a garage fire on the Fourth of July. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Oak Lawn Fire Department responded to a detached garage fire around 9:17 a.m. on West 88th Street. Heavy smoke and flames were visible. Fire crews were able to beat back the flames and quickly extinguished the fire.

“We arrived on the scene fast from Station 2,” OLFD Chief Mike Mavrogeorge said. “Response time definitely made a difference in preventing the fire from spreading to the house and vehicles.”

A firefighter also suffered from heat stress and was treated at the scene. The fire chief said the firefighter is okay.

“The heat affects everyone, but you can imagine how it affects firefighters wearing all of their protective gear,” Mavrogeorge added.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it may have started in a trash can inside the garage.
