Oak Lawn Man Under Influence Of Heroin In Lyons Car Crash: Cops

The man allegedly told police at accident scene that he had "just done a bag of heroin."

LYONS, IL -- An Oak Lawn man got into a car accident in Lyons while he was under the influence of heroin, prosecutors said. James Kamphuis, 55, appeared before Cook County Judge Peter Felice on charges of driving under the influence.

Police responded to the 4300 block of South Prescott in Lyons on May 25. Officers said Kamphuis was seated in the driver’s seat and was “very drowsy.” Kamphuis allegedly told police that "I just done a bag of heroin.”

According to the charges, Kamphuis’s condition worsened as police talked to him. He was brought to the hospital for treatment. Lyons police obtained a search warrant for Kamphuis’s medical records which determined that the Oak Lawn man had opiates in his blood system, the prosecutor said. He was arrested June 20.
