Oak Lawn Spartan Johnny McGowan Ends Year With 79 Three-Pointers
Senior Johnny McGowan finishes his Oak Lawn Community High School basketball career finishes third all-time for single season 3-pointers.

OAK LAWN, IL — Four years ago, when a slender, quiet freshman named Johnny McGowan was called up to the varsity level of the boys basketball program, it was easy to see that he was working on his three-point shot. After all, that’s what earned him the promotion. Gradually during his career, he developed year by year to improve every facet of his game and not just his outside shooting prowess. He eventually became a key part of a strong team.
After recently finishing his basketball career at Oak Lawn Community High School, McGowan certainly left his mark on the program. He ended his senior year with 79 three-pointers, which is good for third all-time for a season at OLCHS. He also cracked the Top 5 in school history for career three-pointers. However, he meant so much more than just threes to the team.
He finished first on the team in assist-to-turnover ratio and minutes played. He was second on the team in rebounding and second in three-point field goal and free throw percentages. He was third on the team in steals per game as well.

“He steadily improved each season, going from a skinny three-point specialist off the bench late during his freshman year to a well-rounded offensive and defensive player who communicated well, took care of the basketball, and someone we simply couldn’t take off the floor this season,” said head coach Jason Rhodes. “He is a team captain and an everyday guy. He had an excellent senior year for the conference champion Spartans and will be greatly missed.”
The Spartans won the South Suburban Conference Red championship for the first time since 1983, and McGowan played a huge role in that accomplishment. Now he turns his attention to college hoops as he heads to the University of Dubuque in Iowa in the fall.
