Chicago Ridge

10505 Oxford Ave. Chicago Ridge — When the Duffy family first moved into their cute 19th Century home seven years ago, they had a lot of spiritual activity, such as doors opening and closing, whistling, curtains opening and closing, and pictures and objects moving, along with the occasional eerie voice. Hearing boxes being dragged across the floor, which she thought was an intruder, Jackie Duffy called her husband (appropriately working the graveyard shift) home at 3 a.m. The Duffys went to village hall to get some information about their house, where they found a 1910 photo of a family sitting on their porch. Since hanging the photo, there has been minimal paranormal activity, says Jackie. “Our cute little house has quiet spirits now, but we love to keep the Halloween spirit alive.” A creepy display with animatronics and scary dolls. We love the tricycle moving by itself across the yard.

6108 WASHINGTON ST., CHICAGO RIDGE — The Valenti family has been decorating their yard for the past seven years at their current address and many more years prior. Their yard haunt looks like a medieval prison, featuring a cemetery, gallows, a guillotine and more. This year the Valentis have partnered with St. Vincent de Paul Chicago and will have a drop box out front for their inaugural Scare, Care and Share Winter Coat Drive, so you get to clean out your closet and enjoy their freaky yard at the same time. The box is out there now through Nov. 1. The haunt goes live around Oct. 20 and will be lit from dusk to 11 p.m. through Halloween, which will feature live actors.

Evanston

1806 Wesley, Evanston — The DeLapp home has been an Evanston favorite every Halloween. The yard features a 10-foot inflatable pumpkin, a 15-foot skeleton, assorted motion activated animatronic werewolves and a spook clown, along with a 12-foot inflatable witch the cackles and stirs a cauldron. “We have several day care groups that make it a destination point to visit daily, as well as people stopping daily for pictures,” says Derek DeLapp, whose family has been decking their yard since he was a kid. Most of the yard is finished. The pictures do not do it justice. Best viewed at night.

One of Hometown’s premiere yard haunts, this scary yard includes 25-30 props including zombies and witches, a handful of which move and talk. There is also a garage haunt. Roche and his girlfriend are out most nights haunting the yard with chainsaws and sledgehammers. This homeowner also has another surprise for trick or treaters. Watch out for the man on the lawn mower. Yard lights dusk till 9 p.m. Monday- Thursday; and dusk to 10:30 p.m. Friday through Saturday.

The haunt is open every day from 6 to 10 p.m. Ghouls and Chuckles the Clown come out to play every Friday and Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m. Hometown's Unforgiven is a proud teal pumpkin house, which means they will provide alternatives to trick or treat candy. The haunt is also accepting donations of food, blankets, toys, leaches, etc. for Animal Welfare League. Stop by, bring the kids, bring the family, bring your friends. Face masks and social distancing required. My dog is afraid of this haunt. Now open.

HOMETOWN'S UNFORGIVEN, 4546 W. 89TH PLACE, HOMETOWN

ADDED! MOURNINGSIDE CEMETERY, 4436 W. 87TH PLACE, HOMETOWN — Mourningside Cemetery proudly takes a place behind two other favorite Hometown haunts on the scary yard tour -- Loretto’s Cemetery and Unforgivin’. We pass by this yard on our way to the dog park. Sabrina Ithal’s has built two animatronics -- a breathing grave and a skeleton digging up a grave. At night, she plays spooky music and projections. She hopes to add other small details, like pumpkins around the fence. The basics are on every night, but on weekends she turns on the bubble foggers. Very kid friendly, no chainsaw people or scare actors’ Lit from 7 to 10:30 p.m., later on Halloween.

MOURNINGSIDE CEMETERY, 4436 W. 87TH PLACE, HOMETOWN

Homewood

18539 ARGYLE AVE., HOMEWOOD — This is Julie Clack's seventh year on the list. Her tree monster could probably beat up the apple-throwing trees in "The Wizard of Oz." Not too scary for kids. There will be scary music on Halloween. Almost all the props are homemade. Her next door neighbor at 18543 Argyle Ave. has joined the fun, although his haunt has more of a scare factor to it.

18539 ARGYLE AVE., HOMEWOOD

ADDED! HAUNTED McHUGH MANOR, 18145 RIEGEL ROAD, HOMEWOOD — McHugh Manor is back — bigger and better — in 2021. Karen and Phil McHugh have turned their front yard into a skeleton's playlot. Each year they add to it, always to the delight of neighbors and passersby. This year, they’ve added more swashbucklers and the Maitlands are down from the tree and in full scare mode at the table with shrimp finger cocktail. The selfie skeletons are ready for pictures, along with all their buds! Walk or drive past dusk to 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; until 11 p.m Friday-Saturday.

HAUNTED McHUGH MANOR, 18145 RIEGEL ROAD, HOMEWOOD

ADDED! NIGHTMARE ON PAGE, 18613 PAGE AVE., HOMEWOOD — Joe Garcia and his neighbor, Tony Licata, have been decorating their yards for over ten years. Lots of homemade props with excruciating attention to detail. Check out the freaky, Hollywood-quality projections on the garage. They are the hit of the neighborhood on Halloween night, when live actors fill the haunts. Why can't I have fun neighbors like these guys? This Halloween, they're having a live band. Lights are on dusk to 10:30-ish.

LaGrange Park

HAUNTED MANSION ON HOMESTEAD, 836 HOMESTEAD ROAD, La GRANGE PARK — "Creepies and crawlies, toads in a pond, let there be music from regions beyond!" And you know when Madame Leota starts spinning the tunes with the ghoulish instruments in her séance room, those Silly Symphony Dancing Skeletons are going to show up and dance until they're dead on their feet ... or is that while they're dead on their feet. Don Coglianese and his family decided to bring Disney to LaGrange Park during last year’s pandemic shutdown. The display is three times larger than the 2020 display. Everything is handmade and hand-painted by the Coglianese family. The display is a loving recreation of Disney’s Haunted Mansion. As a bonus, pass by 816 Homestead to see the Haunted Mansion Butler pointing the way. Your kids will love this yard haunt. Donations are being accepted for Autism Speaks.

Lincolnwoood

7362 East Prairie Road North — Watch out for the 15 men on a dead man's chest. Keith and Mary Pellicano’s kid friendly, pirate-themed yard is already drawing stares from onlookers and cars. Best to see after dark. Yo-ho-ho and bottle of rum. (The Pellicanos’ not-so-decorated neighbor Fred Klepitsch).

Midliothian

GRAVEYARD ON KILPATRICK, 14441 Kilpatrick Ave., Midlothian — Instead of playing tricks, kids come from miles around just to see Judy Scott's giant front yard mausoleum. "I have been decorating my house since around 1988, and I have expanded my decorations to what they are today. It started with my love for Halloween and my son wanting to scare the children. My husband helps with the large displays that are all handmade, like the mausoleum." On Halloween night there are smoke machines, spooky music and a live actor prowling about to scare the kiddies. The haunt will be ready on OCT. 15. Lights are on from dusk to 10:30 p.m.
