Police Broaden Search for Car In Fatal Hit and Run of 5-Year-Old Girl: UPDATED

Chicago Lawn girl was crossing street after buying ice cream from ice cream truck when she she was hit by car Saturday, police say.

Update: Chicago police have identified the make and model of the vehicle that they believe struck a five-year-old Chicago Lawn girl in a fatal hit and run on Saturday afternoon.

The car is a dark-colored, 2-door, Honda Civic with a dull or primer finish, sunroof and spoiler. The vehicle may have a front-end bra, sport muffler and a broken lamp.

Maria Gonzalez, 5, was doing homework on Saturday afternoon when she heard the bells of an ice cream truck. Her father told ABC 7 Chicago that his daughter was returning home after buying ice cream when a dark colored sedan struck her without stopping around 3:15 p.m. Saturday.

Surveillance video from a neighbor’s home security system showed a dark colored sedan hitting the girl as she crossed the 5900 block of Mozart Avenue. Police have released an image from the video of the car after it allegedly hit the 5-year-old girl.

Maria’s father, Juan Marcos Gonzalez, saw the car coming and tried to get to his daughter, but was stopped by a locked gate, ABC 7 Chicago reported.

The Chicago Lawn girl was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where she was pronounced dead at 3:51 p.m., the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said.

Police described the offending vehicle as a dark colored sedan equipped with a sunroof and spoiler. The vehicle may have a front-end bra, sport muffler and a broken lamp. The vehicle was last seen traveling westbound on 60 St. from Mozart Avenue.
