Pound of Cannabis Found During Traffic Stop: Police

Cracked windshield leads to discovery of a pound of cannabis in Chicago man's car five days after legalization, police say.

OAK LAWN, IL — A Chicago man is accused of carting a large quantity of marijuana over the new legal limit of 30 grams in his car. Marquies Williams, 31, appeared before Cook County Judge Terry Gallagher on felony charges of possession of cannabis over 500 grams and unlawful intent to deliver.

Around 8 p.m. Jan. 5, Oak Lawn police pulled a car over near 105th Street and Pulaski Road for a cracked windshield. Williams was sitting in the front passenger seat, the prosecutor said. Officers claimed they could detect a faint odor of marijuana as they approached the car.

All the vehicle’s occupants were ordered out of the car, the prosecutor said. During a search of the car, police said they found a little over a pound of pot on the front seat floorboard, where Williams was sitting. Under the new Illinois law, adults 21 and over may possess fewer than 30 grams of cannabis.
