Pregnant Mom Accused of Pepper-Spraying Security Guards

Prosecutor said woman sprayed Target security guards who were trying to detain acquaintance for shoplifting.

A pregnant mom was arrested after she sprayed two loss prevention officers in the face with pepper spray defending an acquaintance who was detained for shoplifting, prosecutors said Tuesday in court.

Sharnell Thomas, 20, appeared before Cook County Judge Peter Felice on two counts of aggravated battery.

Thomas and an acquaintance were leaving Target, 4120 W. 95th St., Oak Lawn, when they were confronted by store loss prevention officers over a possible retail theft on July 25.

As loss prevention officers were struggling with her acquaintance, Thomas reportedly left and came to back to the store.

Taking aim, Thomas sprayed both officers’ faces with pepper spray, the prosecutor said.

She has no prior criminal background.

The assistant public defender told the judge that Thomas is the mother of a young child with another on the way.

Thomas was released on a $25,000 I-bond. Judge Felice ordered random drug testing and home confinement, except for doctor’s appointments.

“I’m going to take care of that baby,” the judge said.

Thomas is due back in court Aug. 10.
