Oak Lawn Man, 21, Faces Firearm And Drug Charges After Traffic Stop In Auburn-Gresham

CHICAGO—A seat belt traffic stop led to the discovery of psilocybin mushrooms, cannabis and a loaded gun in Chicago’s Auburn Gresham neighborhood. The 21-year-old driver, Abdelrahman Yasean, of Oak Lawn, is accused of armed violence and multiple felony drug charges, all felonies.

Around 3:30 p.m., June 18, the Cook County Sheriff’s Police Organized Crime Division investigators stopped a Honda Accord in the 8700 block of South Parnell Avenue because the driver and his two passengers were not wearing seat belts, sheriff’s police said.

When investigators approached the driver, later identified as Yasean, they claimed to smell burnt cannabis and saw in plain view what appeared to be a cannabis cigar, or blunt. The occupants were asked to step out of the vehicle so that a narcotics search could be conducted.

Investigators said they found a loaded firearm, another magazine, two bars of psilocybin mushrooms, cannabis and $10,000 in cash. Yasean was determined to be the owner of the contraband and was taken into custody, sheriff’s police said.

Later that day, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved felony charges of armed violence, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance, possession of cannabis, and manufacture/delivery of cannabis.

Yasean was ordered detained at Cook County Jail on June 19 at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse, however, he does not appear on the CCSO detainee rolls.
