Shoplifter Steals Tide and Charmin fron Jewel: Cops

Evergreen Park man told police he turned over merchandise to girlfriend, who probably sold it, Oak Lawn cops said.

OAK LAWN, IL -- An Evergreen Park was arrested after he made off with cart full of Tide laundry detergent and Charmin toilet paper, reports said. Vincent C. Johnson, 50, was charged with retail theft. Oak Lawn police said they were able to track the man down through his license plate number.

According to the report, Oak Lawn police went to the Jewel on Pulaski Road around 10:12 a.m. July 2. When officers arrived, the manager told them his cashier saw a man, later identified as Johnson, exit the store with a cart full of Tide and Charmin. The manager went out to the parking lot and asked Johnson to show him his receipt.

Johnson allegedly told the manager that his had the receipt and still inside the store shopping in the store. Police said Johnson loaded the merchandise into his vehicle and drove off west on 95th Street. The store manager was able to get the plate number.

A few hours later, Evergreen Park police Johnson’s car parked in the driveway, reports said. Officers went to Johnson’s door to talk to him. Johnson allegedly old police that he took items out of the store, but believed his girlfriend had paid for the merchandise. He didn’t have the toilet paper or laundry detergent at his house, but turned it over to his girlfriend, who sold them, police said.

The total value of the six bottles of Tide was $102. It is unknown how many rolls of toilet paper were taken, the report said. Johnson was issued a ticket for retail them. He has an adjudication hearing Aug. 1 at Oak Lawn Village Hall.
