Shepard girls tennis team takes second at SSC tournament

Astros miss title by one point.

The varsity girls tennis team from Shepard High School took second place on Saturday at the South Suburban Conference Red Division tournament. The Astros missed winning the championship by just one point.

The #1 Doubles team of Roxie Habbal and Saniah Calvin won their fourth straight SSC Red championship, the second time in Shepard history we've celebrated a four-peat at doubles.

They beat Richards for the championship to improve to 18-1 overall this season.

"It is very rare for a team to win 4 straight championships, especially a doubles team. Two quiet freshmen who wanted to play singles formed a special bond which turned out to be one the best doubles teams in Shepard’s history," Coach Kelly Myron said.

Four years earlier, Roxie watched her older sister Rachel Habbal and partner Brooke Zielke become 4 year conference champions at 1st doubles.

Saniah is a 3 sport athlete including bowling and track. She is also a national Business Professionals of America finalist while Roxie is the president of the National Honor Society. They still find time to compete together on the Girls Track & Field Program in the spring.

"In the 2018 tennis season, they lost their State qualifying match in a 4 hour 3rd set match, vs Marist, under the lights. This year they are the potential #3 seed at the sectional tournament hosted by Sandburg this Friday. Whatever the outcome, I am so proud of both of these ladies," coach added.
