STEM CLUB VISITS ARGONNE NATIONAL LABORATORY

The Oak Lawn Community High School STEM Club values field trips that provide real world experiences for its members. On Thursday, October 16, twenty-seven students ranging from freshmen to seniors attended the first of these field trips at an academic lecture at Argonne National Laboratory entitled “Computation, Big Data, and the Future of Cities.” This after-hours field trip inspired students to learn more about the concept of research and the power that data has on social policy. The lecture, given by Charlie Catlett, Computer Scientist at Argonne National Laboratory, described how the world’s urban areas will double over the next several decades. This increase brings challenges of climate change, water, energy and food security. The STEM club aims to go on field trips on a quarterly basis.
