Methodology

Researchers standardized raw data from 2013 FBI crime statistics by city, according to ValuePenguin. The data included property crimes such as burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft and arson, and violent crimes such as murder/manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault.

Crimes were measured per 100,000 to consider population. The crime scores were created by weighing violent crime at 90 percent and property crime at 10 percent, ValuePenguin reported. Places were then ranked based on these crime scores.
