U.S. Rep. Marie Newman Pays Tribute To Oak Lawn Veterans
U.S. Rep. Marie Newman thanks Oak Lawn veterans for their service at Johnson-Phelps VFW Post 5220 Veterans Day event.

OAK LAWN, IL — Inclement weather moved many south suburban Veterans Day ceremonies indoors. Congresswoman Marie Newman (IL-03) joined veterans at the the Johnson-Phelps VFW Post 5220 when Oak Lawn’s Veterans Day ceremony had to be moved indoors at the last minute Thursday moring.
Newman thanked Oak Lawn veterans for their service and paid tribute to her own veteran father on Nov. 11:
My dad was the hardest-working guy I knew, and as a peacekeeper in Europe, he fought tirelessly for peace and freedom.
I applaud his sacrifice as he worked against rising authoritarianism and preserving democratic principles across the world. American heroes courageously fight for our democracy every day they serve, and it doesn't end when they come home.
Let's thank our nation's veterans and their families for defending our democracy, putting the country before themselves, and keeping all of us safe.
To any veterans reading this - thank you for your service!
