AARP Experience Corps Chicago: First Year a Success!

Last fall, AARP Experience Corps launched its award-winning program in 14 Chicago public schools, serving thousands of students in need.

In its inaugural year, AARP Experience Corps Chicago is pleased to report 54% of the students served at 14 CPS schools advanced a year or more in reading levels, of which 42% attained grade level reading. The program served 90 Kindergarten through 3rd grade classrooms and over 1000 students.

“Achieving this level of impact is quite impressive during our first year,” says Branch Director, Myrna Torres. The success with CPS students demonstrates the reliability of Experience Corps’ research-based intergenerational program model. Before starting the 2013-2014 school year, the vast majority of the children in the program were significantly below their grade level in reading by at least a year or more.

One key to the program’s success is its dedicated volunteers. AARP Experience Corps continues to search for volunteer tutors who love to read. If you are looking to leave a legacy with a meaningful impact or contribution in your retirement years, please join us in helping our CPS students become scholars with a love for learning.
