Divine Consign: A Consignment Shop Set Apart, With Heart

While most thrift stores sell used items in varying conditions, Divine Consign sets itself apart by having high-end furniture at low-end prices.

Located in Oak Park, at 111 N. Oak Park Ave. and 810 North Blvd, most items are donated from model houses or private owners. The brands range from Ralph Lauren to John Richards, and various pieces from as far back as a century ago.

The mission of Divine Consign is to find a new purpose for furniture that usually would be kept in storage instead of being put into use.

According to owner Kellie Scott, if the shop does not sell an item within 60 days, she usually donates it to various regional charities or returns the piece to the owner. This helps create space for incoming furniture.

“What we try to do is fill a niche that you rarely ever see fulfilled, with most thrift stores having low prices and used furniture,” Scott said. “On the other hand there are stores that sell well-made furniture at higher prices. We try and bridge the gap in between, selling very beautiful and well-made furniture around 40 to 60 percent off.”

One recent day, Divine Consign was holding a sidewalk sale. One customer, upon learning of the store’s policy to donate many of its unsold items, expressed surprise.

“I knew that the furniture was donated, but I always wondered what they did with what didn't sell,” she said. “But you’re telling me they donate what doesn't sell? That's very kind hearted of them.”

A Divine Consign employee took a moment from unloading incoming shipments to talk about his work.

“It's tough work moving things around, OK?” he said. “But the fact we're doing something with this stuff, rather than letting it sit around helps. That, and the fact we donate stuff as well, makes lifting couches and wardrobes easier.”
