Breakfast at Delia's

Niko Karabatsis is putting the final touches on Delia's Kitchen, which in this case means holding court with the remaining contractors milling around the downtown restaurant's renovated space.

The restaurant, located at 1034 Lake St. in what used to be the Maple Tree, is set to open "at the end of the week," said Karabatsis.

"It's going to be good food, fast service, affordable prices," he said.

Karabatsis, 50, also owns Marilyn's Restaurant & Pancake House in Morton Grove. He said the Delia's menu will be similar to what's offered there, but it will also include some special touches.

Think family restaurant, Oak Park style.

In addition to classic diner breakfast items and sandwiches, the menu will have gluten-free, vegetarian and organic offerings.

Delia's staff will pour Intellegentsia coffee, prepare smoothies and brew bubble teas. The eatery will also feature products from nearby Olive & Well.

On Friday, several groups of would-be diners stepped into the restaurant but were reluctantly turned away by Karabatsis, who promptly invited each group to return later this week.

Phyllis Wendell was in one of those groups. She said it was nice to see the once-vacant downtown space occupied, particularly by a family-style restaurant.

"A lot of restaurants have moved farther west. It's not that far to walk, but it's nice to see something in this space," said Wendell of Oak Park. "The idea of an upscale family place is great."
