The winner of the Kentucky Derby has a lot of lessons to share with us: California Chrome wasn't bred by champions - two guys who loved horse racing and a particular horse, even though it had lost a lot of races, bought that horse and bred her with a lack luster horse, and, California Chrome was born. They hired a 77 year old trainer to work with the horse for two years, and, most recently they hired the jockey who won the Kentucky Derby with War Emblem in 2002. Against all odds, California Chrome is a champion.
What is the lesson to share? For me, this is a great lesson that highlights what can be accomplished when people have a passion for something and work tirelessly at taking a dream from vision to reality. It is a story about recognizing what you have to work with and maximizing that by hiring the right team to work towards a goal. It is a story about the power of positive thinking. It's a story that recognizes that sometimes sheer determination can overcome the odds - that you don't have to be a thoroughbred to be a winner !!!
