Chicago Police Officer Hit By Metra Train In Squad Car: Officials

Authorities said the police officer was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after the crash Saturday evening.

ELMWOOD PARK, IL — A Chicago police officer was hit by a Metra train while in their patrol car Saturday evening, officials said.

According to a police spokesperson, the officer was driving across a railroad crossing in the 7700 block of West Grand Avenue when his vehicle was hit by an oncoming train. The incident occurred at around 5 p.m.

The officer was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, a Metra spokeswoman said. Officials did not say what exact injuries the officer had.

Metra official Meg Reile said none of the 100 Metra train riders were injured in the crash. An engineer was sent to the scene to ensure the gate and warning lights were working properly. Reile said everything appeared to be working as it should at the crossing.

Metra is still investigating the incident.
