Cops Hope Registration Will Deter Bike Theft In Oak Park

Registered bikes will be marked by a hard-to-remove sticker that will help police track the bike if stolen.

OAK PARK, IL — Oak Park Police are encouraging residents to register their bikes in an effort to help prevent bike thefts as the weather gets warmer. Registration is free and provides bikers with a "difficult-to-remove decal" that will help identify their bike if it's stolen, police say.

Resident can visit Village Hall to register a bike or can print and complete a form that's available on the Village of Oak Park website. To register, you need your bike's serial number in addition to details about the make, wheel size, frame, gears, and brake style.

Police say marking bikes in this way will provide a red flag if the bike is stolen and attempted to be resold or used by someone other than the owner. They also hope potential bike thieves will be deterred if they see a bike registration sticker.
