District 90 Moves Forward with Roosevelt Project

Roosevelt Renovation to Start in June

At the March 1 Committee of the Whole meeting, The Board of Education awarded the Roosevelt Exterior Project to K.R. Miller Contractors for $1.417 million. Board members also approved the filing of an application for building permit for the Roosevelt Exterior Project with the Cook County Regional Office of Education. These Board actions advance the renovation of the Roosevelt Middle School campus, which will start during the summer of 2016.

The purpose of the Roosevelt Exterior Project is to improve student safety, campus aesthetics, and the functionality of the school site. Planning for this project has been extensive and has undergone several revisions over the course of the last few years. The current plan maintains many of the project’s initial elements, including the location and configuration of the proposed playground improvements, the installation of bicycle racks and pedestrian paths, and the development of a “through block” walkway that provides for easy and safe access from Jackson Avenue to Lathrop Avenue. The plan modifications include improving the North Lot while retaining 36 parking spaces. The total site plan will retain 50 off-street parking spaces. Updated landscaping, improved lighting and signage, and the introduction of shade and ornamental trees are part of the plan’s campus aesthetics.

The Board of Education’s and District 90 administration’s actions reflect an understanding and appreciation regarding the interests of many stakeholders and stakeholder groups. More importantly, the project’s reconfiguration underscores the high value the District places on community partnership and collaboration.
