Early Childhood Screening: The First Step Toward a Lifetime of Successful Learning

Schedule Screening for Your 3-5 Year-Old to Prepare for School

All River Forest children, who are between the ages of three and five and who are not currently attending the public schools, are eligible for free screening services offered by the River Forest Public Schools.

Getting off to a good start is important when a child enters school. Educators have found that early identification of potential problems is an important first step in preparing young children for successful entry into school and a lifetime of learning. Early identification often prevents a small problem from turning into a large one. Many learning problems are more easily treated and corrected before children enter school.

For children between the ages of three and five, screening at the River Forest Public Schools will include an assessment of each child’s speech and language development as well as vision and hearing evaluation. Screening will take place at the River Forest Public Schools on

  • Lincoln School - 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
  • Willard School - 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Children living north of Chicago Avenue will be screened at Willard School, 1250 Ashland Avenue. To schedule an appointment, call 708-366-6740.

Children living south of Chicago Avenue will be screened at Lincoln School, 511 Park Avenue. To schedule an appointment, call 708-366-7340.

If parents cannot schedule an appointment this week, please call the school to schedule one another time.

For children from birth through age two, Oak/Leyden Developmental Services offers screening for a child who has a suspected delay in the area of gross-motor, fine motor, communications, cognition, self-help, or social development. Call Rachel Wood, 708-524-1050 ext. 107, to schedule an appointment for screening.
