Always Expect the Unexpected at the Eastgate

People discover the Eastgate Café in all kinds of ways. Sometimes they’re looking for a charming place for lunch or dinner. Sometimes seeking an evening’s entertainment. But however, they discover us, we usually exceed expectations. Here’s Catherine M’s story of her first Eastgate experience.

“I had been talking to my friend Lotus (coolest name ever!) about The Moth storytelling podcast because she had not heard of it. She said she would like to go some time. Then the next thing I know, she sends me a text asking if I want to go to a storytelling event at the Eastgate Cafe. I knew of the place as I pass it frequently on my way to and from the Kadampa Buddhist Centre a block away. But Lotus's text was very last minute and I already had plans for the night. She went though, and told a story and had a great time.

The next day, my husband and I were going to meet some relatives from Wisconsin downtown at Demera, the wonderful Ethiopian restaurant and then go on to The Green Mill to listen to some jazz. Every time we had gone to the Green Mill before, we arrived at 7:30 and managed to get a seat, but that night they were full when we got there, so we were very disappointed. We went around the corner to another bar and got a drink but it was not a great atmosphere and we left early.

On our way home, we were driving down Harrison Street in Oak Park and I noticed some musicians with a saxophone player through the window at the Eastgate Cafe. We quickly stopped the car to check it out. Well, the jazz was wonderful and the place a total delight. After the set, one of the musicians sat with us and chatted about jazz in Chicago. Apart from our relatives missing out, we were no longer disappointed about missing the show at The Green Mill and now we have a new local to hang out in and I am even planning on telling my own story at the next "Do Not Submit" storytelling event.”

Maybe you can join Catherine! The " Not Submit" storytelling is June 14 and our jam sessions are every Sunday from 4 to 7 pm. Hope you can make it soon. There's no cover charge - just great food and a full bar for your dining pleasure.
