Encore is thrilled to announce it’s summer production of West Side Story! West Side Story is the direct story of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, this musical takes place on New York’s West Side in the mid- 1950’s amidst racial and social tension. The show begins as a war is building between two rival gangs fighting over the same piece of turf: born and raised New York boys, The Jets, and Puerto Rican immigrants The Sharks. In the midst of the battlefield are two young romantics; good- guy Tony and wide-eyed beauty Maria, the sister of the Shark leader. When Tony and Maria unexpectedly meet and fall for one another, tensions between the rival groups escalate. Through these rivals and acts of violence we follow two young lovers trying to find a way to be together and survive while hate and ignorance are unwilling and times are hard. This classic story, music and profound choreography will move you and exceed your expectations of high school theater. With miraculous talent, heart and passion for this beautiful story, Encore’s cast of West Side Story will take you on the extravagant journey of Tony, Maria and the infamous West Side.
