Adapted to film twice, it is a tale of seven passengers who meet in the lounge of an ocean liner at sea and realize that they have no idea why they are there, or where they are bound. Each of them eventually discovers that they are dead, and they are heading toward Judgment Day. When no producers wanted to stage the production, fearing its unusual combination of fantasy and drama, Vane decided to produce it himself. It proved to be a huge success, becoming the hit of the 1923 London season, and later garnering success in New York as well.

Featured actors in the cast include: Mara Dale of Oak Park (Mrs. Midget); Kaori Aoshima of Highland Park (Ann); Matthew Bausone of Des Plaines (Tom); Grant Nelson of Wilmette (Duke); Zachary Champagne of Elmhurst (Scrubby); and Kelly Combs (Mrs. Cliveden-Banks), Bruce Cronander (Mr. Lingley), John Moy (Henry), and Christopher Skyles (Thompson) of Chicago.

The play is directed by Micheal Kott of Carol Stream. Kott has directed seven productions on the mainstage of JPACtheatre. He has also performed in over 30 JPAC productions, the first being Blood Brothers in 1997. Kott said that he has had Outward Bound "circling around the back of his mind" for the past eight years. He notes that the tremendously thought provoking and obscure subject matter will bring vibrancy and life into the script and draw the interest and attention of our audience members.
