The Evolution of a Community - Howard Van Doren Shaw and Frank Lloyd Wright in Lake Forest

Explore Howard Van Doren Shaw's Lake Forest with the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust on Thurday, April 21, 2016

Heralded among the most gifted of the Arts and Crafts architects, Howard Van Doren Shaw was initially associated with the Prairie School. Although Shaw’s conservative designs would ultimately distance him from these early collaborators, critics have continued to compare his work to that of Frank Lloyd Wright’s even today. The Evolution of a Community: Howard Van Doren Shaw and Frank Lloyd Wright in Lake Forest, travels to the North Shore to investigate the town Shaw helped build. As deeply ingrained as Wright is in the architectural fabric of Oak Park, Shaw’s presence is felt in Lake Forest.

Explore Ragdale, Shaw’s personal summer retreat, now an artists’ community founded by the architect’s granddaughter, poet Alice Judson Hayes. You have the rare opportunity to walk through the 1897 Ragdale House, stroll around stunning gardens, and learn about several artist studios.

Enjoy lunch at Shaw’s 1916 Market Square, the first planned shopping district in the country.
