Guerin College Prep Hosts Open House for Prospective High School Students

Guerin College Preparatory High School invites prospective high school students and their families to visit on November 17

River Grove, IL (October 31, 2014) Guerin College Preparatory High School (www.guerinprep.org), a Catholic, co-educational college preparatory school, invites prospective high school students and their families to visit and explore the school during an Open House scheduled on November 17.

Guerin Prep, situated on a 23-acre, wireless campus in River Grove on Chicago’s northwest side, serves approximately 450 students from Chicago and surrounding suburbs. The school boasts a 1:12 teacher-to-student ratio and a 100 percent college acceptance rate. Guerin Prep is structured to meet the individual strengths and interest areas of each student. The curriculum includes three rigorous academic programs of study (Sullivan College Preparatory Program, Providence College Preparatory Program and the advanced Nolan Scholar Program), as well as an advanced placement program for students.

Attendees to this year’s open house will also have a chance to preview the school’s two new cutting-edge programs: The Department of Research and Innovation, a newly-created department focused on STEM studies, entrepreneurism, and robotics; and the Guerin International Experience, an international exchange student program, in which 13 Chinese students have come to Guerin Prep to complete their high school education.

New This Year: The Department of Research and Innovation and the Guerin International Experience

As STEM studies become an increasingly important focus in academia and the workplace, Guerin Prep has responded by creating the Department of Research and Innovation. The department reinforces current STEM teachings and adds the additional elements of robotics and entrepreneurial thinking. Students will take classes such as forensic science, physics, and STEM, and utilize the newest technology in the classroom, including tablets and a 3D printer.

The Guerin International Experience prepares students for an increasingly connected and global world in which students attend college and work alongside individuals from a wide variety of cultures, ethnic backgrounds and faiths. Through the international experience program, Guerin Prep allows students to engage in a multicultural educational experience, providing them with the skills to appreciate and understand different perspectives. These skills will make them better prepared to navigate and succeed in a world in which it has become imperative to be culturally well-versed. For the 2014-15 school year, 13 Chinese students have joined Guerin Prep to study and learn side-by-side with current students, exchanging ideas and learning from each other.

Open House

Guerin Prep’s Open House is a unique experience in which parents and students are given their own unique tours, allowing Guerin Prep to customize the tour to meet individual concerns and interests. The parents meet with Karen Booth, Principal, and Steve Baldwin, President, to learn about the core curriculum, student experience, admission requirements, tuition, and financial aid. Students participate in a variety of five-minute classes to experience what a school day is like at Guerin Prep.

In 2014, Guerin graduates were collectively awarded more than seven million dollars in college scholarships. Especially notable among the students who received scholarships was Taylor Reiss, who received a full scholarship to Purdue University through the prestigious Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship.“We encourage all families who are seeking a solid high school educational experience to visit Guerin,” said Steve Baldwin, President of Guerin Prep. “We continue to see consistent growth at Guerin Prep each year, and our graduates have gone on to more than 100 universities and colleges including Yale, Notre Dame, and Michigan State. Yet we’ve continued to maintain the balance between a highly academic education and a value-based experience,” he added.

Beyond academics, students participate in a four-year theology program and can also choose from a variety of programs including band, strings, piano, choir, theatre, dance, photography, drawing, design, and ceramics. Guerin offers a variety of interscholastic sports teams for both boys and girls, including softball, basketball, track, hockey, cross country, and wrestling. It also has an athletic center with a weight room, two full-sized gyms, and a wrestling room. There are more than 30 academic, arts, leadership, and honor society clubs in this supportive community.
