Hemingway Museum To Close As Foundation Plans Writing And Research Center In Oak Park

The Ernest Hemingway Museum at 200 Oak Park Ave. will close on October 15.

OAK PARK, IL — The Ernest Hemingway Museum is set to close its doors after 26 years in Oak Park, but the Hemingway Foundation has plans to celebrate the author with a different facility. The museum's last day will be October 15 before it shuts its doors to make way for a new research and writing center to honor Hemingway's literary legacy.

The Hemingway Center for Writing & Research will be located at 339 N. Oak Park Ave., footsteps from the home where Hemingway was born and raised. Exhibits and memorabilia will still have a spot at the new space, in addition to classrooms, offices, and a souvenir shop for Hemingway fanatics, according to Chicago Tribune.

The goal of the Hemingway Center for Writing & Research is to make the author's works and writing style more accessible to modern audiences, aspiring writers, and budding Hemingway scholars.

The first step will be to raise funds to support the new endeavor, officials told Chicago Tribune. Though the foundation's focus will now shift to the writing and research center, the beloved museum will not be forgotten. The foundation plans to preserve some exhibits at the Oak Park Library and provide others to interested museums.
