Huskie Pride: 5 Unforgettable Athletes From Oak Park and River Forest High School

From local fields to national fame, these stars got their start in Oak Park.

Sports run deep in Oak Park, and Oak Park and River Forest High School has long been at the heart of it. It’s no surprise some standout talent once wore the Huskie uniform. Today we're celebrating five unforgettable athletes from Oak Park and River Forest High School who made a name for themselves well beyond the hometown field.


1. Dani Tyler – Olympic Softball Player (Team USA)

A River Forest native, Tyler starred at Oak Park–River Forest High School, earning All-State honors in softball and later receiving the school’s Tradition of Excellence Award. She went on to a standout collegiate career at Drake University, leading the Bulldogs to consecutive Missouri Valley Conference tournament titles. Tyler was selected to the inaugural U.S. Olympic softball team and won gold at the 1996 Atlanta Games, playing third base. She represented Team USA from 1994 to 2000 and was inducted into the Missouri Valley Conference Hall of Fame in 2017. (Sources: TeamUSA, OPRF Museum)


2. Sidney Herbert Hatch – Olympic Distance Runner

Hatch attended Oak Park and River Forest High School , where he competed in track before becoming one of the nation’s premier endurance runners. He was a silver medalist in the men’s four-mile team event at the 1904 St. Louis Olympic Games and competed in the Olympic marathon in both 1904 and 1908. Hatch also placed second in the 1917 Boston Marathon and set an unofficial world record in the 100-mile run. Beyond athletics, he was awarded the Croix de Guerre for heroism during World War I. 3. Chuck Hoag – Olympic Basketball Player (Team USA)

A multi-sport standout at Oak Park and River Forest High School, Hoag lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track before attending the University of Kansas. He was part of Kansas’ 1952 NCAA championship team and went on to represent the United States in basketball at the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games, where Team USA won gold. Hoag was posthumously honored with OPRF’s Tradition of Excellence Award in 2013. (Sources: OPRFMuseum, OakPark)


4. Becky Wilczak – Olympic Luger (Team USA)

Wilczak grew up in River Forest and graduated from Oak Park–River Forest High School in 1998 before becoming one of the top U.S. competitors in luge. She won a bronze medal at the 2001 FIL World Luge Championships and competed in women’s singles at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, tying the best finish ever by an American female luger at the time. 5. John Register – Paralympic Track & Field Athlete

Register attended Oak Park–River Forest High School and went on to compete at the highest level in adaptive athletics following a life-altering injury during military service. He represented the United States in Paralympic track and field and later became a leading advocate for Paralympians worldwide, serving in leadership roles within the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic movement and international sport organizations.
