Lake Theatre's First Tuesday Film Club Movie for July: "Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem"

Oak Park, IL – The First Tuesday Film Club presents the drama “Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem” on Tuesday, July 7, 2015, at noon and 7 PM. Tickets are $6 per person for matinee/seniors and $8.50 for adults in the evening. Advance tickets are available on line or at the Lake Theatre box office, 1022 Lake Street in downtown Oak Park.

“Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem” (115m) is about an Israeli woman, seeking to finalize her divorce from her cruel and manipulative husband, who finds herself effectively put on trial by her country’s religiously-based marriage laws. In Israel there is neither civil marriage nor civil divorce; only rabbis can legalize a marriage or its dissolution, which is only possible with the husband’s full consent. Viviane Amsalem has applied for a divorce for three years but her husband, Elisha, will not agree. His inflexibility, Viviane’s determination to fight for her freedom and the ambiguous role of the judges shape a procedure in which tragedy vies with absurdity.

The movie won Israeli Film Academy awards for Best Film, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Screenplay. It also won Best Screenplay at the Chicago International Film Festival.
