Man Charged in Oak Park Home Invasion, Sex Assault, Robbery

Police arrested a suspect wanted in connection to a May 21 home invasion in which a woman was bound, assaulted and robbed in an Oak Park home.

Mark Barnes, 43, was arrested Saturday and charged with home invasion, aggravated criminal sexual assault and armed robbery, according to Oak Park police.

Evidence found at the crime scene was analyzed by Illinois State Police Crime Laboratory to connect Barnes to the home invasion. Barns was found in a motel in the 9300 block of south Cicero Avenue in Oak Lawn, and Oak Lawn police helped Oak Park police arrest Barnes without incident.

A judge denied bond for Barnes. His next court date is scheduled for June 9 in Markham, according to Cook County Sheriff’s Office records.

Barnes was previously convicted of criminal sexual assault with a firearm in 1997. He was released from Illinois Department of Corrections custody in April.

Police chief Rick C. Tanksley credited the work of the Oak Park Police Department, the Chicago Transit Authority’s Office of Security and the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force.

“Crimes of this type are rare in our community,” Tanksley said in a statement. “But when they do occur, there are many law enforcement resources the department can call upon to assist us.”
