Man Shoots Through Door At Home Invaders On West Side

Police are not filing charges against a 78-year-old who defended his home.

OAK PARK, IL — A homeowner fired his gun at suspects who were trying to break through his front door Monday on Chicago's West Side, police said. Three men were trying to pry open his screen door in the 1600 block of North Merrimac just before 9 p.m., according to police.

The 78-year-old homeowner fired shots through the door and struck one of the suspects, police said. He saw the man limp away and then watched the two others drive off in a red Dodge Caravan.

The condition of the man who was shot is not known, police said.

The homeowner has a valid Firearm Owners Identification card, police said. He will not be facing charges.
