Neighbor Helps Cops Catch Would-Be Carjackers In Oak Park

Police caught the suspects 20 minutes after the neighbor called to report a carjacking.

OAK PARK, IL — An Oak Park resident used quick action to help police apprehend a pair of would-be carjackers late Tuesday. The carjacking attempt took place just after 8 p.m. in the 1100 block of S. Grove Ave., but was thwarted when the victim honked their horn and the neighbor called police with a description of the suspects.

Police say the intended victim was sitting inside her locked car, which was parked inside her garage, when two men entered via the open garage door. One man tried to get into the car via the driver's side and the second suspect demanded the she get out of the car.

The woman began honking her horn, which caused the men to flee. That's when a neighbor observed the men and called police with a detailed description of the suspects.

Roughly 20 minutes later, patrol officers in the 800 block of S. Oak Park Ave. stopped two men who matched the description of the suspects. Both suspects, an adult male and a juvenile from Chicago, were taken into custody and positively identified by the intended victim and her neighbor.
