(Chicago, Ill.) May 31, 2017—Andrea de Fraga, the Oak Park-based author of the “Piggy Bank Book,” felt a need from families who were in search of a resource to help them teach their young children ages 6 to 11 to become financially wise and savvy.
De Fraga, a business management professor at Chicago’s Columbia College, is now able to offer this book to the public thanks to many Kickstarter backers who raised $9,430 to cover production costs.
“I’m pleased that so many people believed in the mission of this book which is to teach our kids real money basics that will stay with them through their adulthood,” de Fraga said. “This book teaches kids how to be thoughtful spenders instead of mindless consumers.”
Introduced by Penny the pig, the book is a ledger that lets children keep track of the money they have and spend. Additionally, there are activities that will help readers make smart choices and those examples include: “The Cost of Going Out to Eat” and “The $10 Challenge.” These examples bring home the message of how the everyday occurrences that people take for granted can really add up. Additionally, young readers will also learn how to open a savings account and to write down what they are saving for as well what gifts they would like to give. The book also comes with a pouch so that children can carry their money and know how much is left after spending.
For a successful campaign, de Fraga reached out to local influencers who attended a pre-book launch and hosted an informative Facebook Live chat.
“It’s through financial literacy that kids will have the opportunity to chase their dreams instead of having to chase a paycheck,” de Fraga said.
