Oak Park Student Wins Gold At Special Olympics In Peoria

Salvador Martinez, an eighth-grader at Brooks Middle School, earned a gold medal at the Special Olympics state bowling competition, which was held Saturday, Dec. 7, in Peoria, Illinois.

Sal won two previous tournaments to qualify, and at the state championship he edged his competition by only two pins to take the gold medal.
This past year was first year that District 97 had a Special Olympics bowling team. The season started at the end of May and went through the middle of July. Twenty-five middle school students participated, including students with and without disabilities. The team is looking forward to another great bowling season in 2020.
