The Return of Elegance – Jazz Supper Club Nights at the Eastgate

The Terry Sullivan Trio performs at the Eastgate Cafe, 102 Harrison St. on Saturday July 20

Supper Club. The words conjure up images of Grace Kelly and Cary Grant in an Edith Head gown and Louis Vuitton tux respectively, winding their way gracefully through crisply covered candle-lit tables until they take their seats and toast each other with perfectly shaken, not stirred martinis.

Of course, this form of entertainment has for the most part gone the way of white-gloved debutantes applying for their first jobs as receptionists at Fortune 500 corporations. But don’t despair. The Supper Club – with all the glamour, style and sophisticated class of the world it was so much a part of – is making a comeback.

The Eastgate Café, 102 Harrison St in Oak Park is now offering a musical series entitled “Jazz Supper Club Nights at the Eastgate Café.” The first of these special performances will take place on Saturday July 20 from 6:30 to 10:00 PM, featuring The Terry Sullivan Trio. Vocalist Terry Sullivan will be accompanied by guitarist Lee Rothenberg and bass player Stewart Miller.

Miss Sullivan started her musical career singing in early music ensembles and small concert choirs. Inspired by the work of Anita O’Day and Blossom Dearie, she turned to jazz several years ago and has been performing in intimate venues in the Chicago area ever since. Like Miss Sullivan, musicians Lee Rothenberg and Stewart Miller are known and admired throughout the Chicagoland jazz community.

In addition to the pleasure of hearing the trio’s interpretation of the Great American Songbook, guests will also enjoy their choice of filet mignon, grilled salmon, lasagna or harvest chicken in a prix fixe dinner. Since the Eastgate offers a fully stocked bar, cocktails are available along with a choice of house wines and beers.

Best of all, reservations for this return to the romantic sophistication of a bygone era are available at a price that would have been affordable even 40 years ago - $45 per person. But seats are VERY limited and Terry has lots of fans. So please reserve your ticket as soon as possible by calling 708.660.9091. Your trip to another time and place awaits.
