River Forest Township Co-Sponsors Lively Entertainment and Insightful Educational Programming at Library

As Township-Library Collaboration Grows, 'Acappella Fellas' Hit All the Right Notes in 'Coffee Monday' Gathering; Next Session Is March 7th

River Forest Township and River Forest Public Library have added some spice to Coffee Mondays.

Each month, on the first Monday, the library provides free coffee from Blue Max Coffee and a chance for all comers to connect with one another. Recently, however, the two organizations have supplemented the caffeination, community and conversation with a variety of entertainment and educational offerings.

Coffee Mondays’ upgraded offerings took shape most recently on February 1st with a duo of singers, known as Acappella Fellas. Composed of Joseph Saintcross of Villa Park (tenor, lead singer) and Jay Van Cura of Riverside (baritone, harmonies), the group drew from a variety of 1940s, ‘50s, ‘60s Broadway musical and pop hit songs.

Their selections included “Yesterday” and “All My Loving,” by the Beatles, as well as “Pretty Woman,” “Getting To Know You,” “That’s Amore,” “Under the Boardwalk” and “Mister Sandman.”

Each of the monthly Coffee Monday sessions begins at 10 a.m. at the library, 735 Lathrop Ave., and is co-sponsored by the Township. The entertainment or educational portion usually takes about a half-hour, with the other half-hour available for socializing among those who gather.

The events are gaining in popularity, said River Forest Township Supervisor Carla Sloan.

“We have an abundance of talented and passionate people in the area, and we’re pleased to be able to team up with the library on this programming,” Sloan said. “It is gratifying to set the stage for so many memorable programs for all our residents, and in particular our senior population.”

In January, Cathaleen Roach of River Forest Township led a session “Getting Started: The Why’s and the How’s of Beginning Your Life Story or Memoir Writing.”

The next Coffee Monday is March 7th, with River Forest Police Officer Glen Czernick providing tips on how to detect and prevent common scams that target seniors in the area. On April 4th, Lila Pagni will discuss aging well through exercise. She leads a local fitness class geared toward older adults at the West Cook YMCA in Oak Park.

The partnership between the township and library is part of a broader collaboration that includes a speaker series with programming known as “Let’s Celebrate Seniors All Year Long.”
