Metra Extends Unlimited $8 Passes For Holidays

Metra's $8 unlimited weekend passes will cover the three-day holiday weekend and up to 3 kids under 11 can ride free with adult.

GREATER CHICAGO, IL — Metra riders who plan to travel during the holiday season will get an added bonus: the ability to ride as many times they want for just $8. Since Christmas and New Year's Day both fall on Mondays this year, the Metra weekend pass will be valid through Monday Dec 23 through Dec. 25 and Dec. 30 through Jan. 1, according to a press release from Metra.

Weekend passes that are bought on the train or at the station will be good for the full three-day weekend. Customers who use the Ventra app to buy their Metra tickets should select the "Holiday 3-Day Pass" to get unlimited three-day weekend access for just $8.

In addition to the unlimited $8 passes, Metra is offering free rides for up to three kids age 11 or younger if accompanied by an adult.

The $8 holiday passes will come in handy for commuters, as the winter holidays are on target to be one of the worst times to travel in Illinois, especially if you're driving.

Metra has also added some additional train times to accommodate travelers who are heading out for the holidays. On Dec. 22 and 23 and Dec. 28 and 29, early afternoon departures will be added to "accommodate workers and shoppers making an early getaway to start their long holiday weekends."

Metra notes that some rush hour trains will be canceled on these days.

Additionally, on New Year's Eve, Metra will hold the last train on some lines to allow passengers celebrating late to hop on. Depending on the train line, the last train will depart between 1:10 a.m. and 1:25 a.m. on New Year's Eve.

With the exception of some late trains being held on New Year's Eve, Metra's holiday/Sunday schedule will be in effect on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day.
