Students Removed For Non-Residency In Oak Park District 97

Two students are unable to return to Oak Park District 97 after the board unanimously approved their removal for non-residency.

OAK PARK, IL — Two students have been forced to leave the Oak Park schools they attended after it was discovered they did not qualify as residents. An investigation by Oak Park District 97 determined last month that the students were not residents of Oak Park, according to Chicago Tribune.

A residency hearing was held on Dec. 6 and board members voted unanimously on Dec. 19 to remove both students and charge their families pro-rated tuition for their time in attendance, Chicago Tribune reports.

The District 97 policy manual states that "A student’s residence is the same as the person who has legal custody of the student." The policy manual also outlines the documentation that a person with legal custody who is not a natural or adoptive parent needs to get approval for a student's residency.

When a District 97 student's residency is brought into question, the school board notifies the person who enrolled the student. The parent or guardian can then request a residency hearing to present evidence to "challenge the determination."

District 97 did not immediately respond to a request for comment early Tuesday evening.
