Thanksgiving Weekend: Free Parking, Police Patrols In Oak Park

Oak Park will ease some parking restrictions over the Thanksgiving holiday and police patrols will be out in full force.

OAK PARK, IL — The village of Oak Park plans to ease parking restrictions for Thanksgiving weekend, including allowing free weekend parking for shoppers in its public garage. During the holiday weekend, police also urge motorists to stay buckled up and drive safely, as patrols will be heightened throughout the holidays.

Eased Parking Restrictions

Overnight parking restrictions will be lifted in most residential areas in Oak Park, according to a release from the village. This temporary lift will be in effect from 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 22 until 2:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 27. Paid overnight permit areas will still have overnight parking restrictions and posted daytime regulations will also be in effect.

Heightened Police Patrols

Oak Park Police Department is joining the state of Illinois in increasing traffic patrols from mid-November through the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Police will be issuing tickets and other traffic citations for seatbelt violations. They remind motorists to stay alert, drive safely, and never to get behind the wheel after drinking.

Free Garage Parking

To accommodate holiday shoppers, the Oak Park will offer free parking in public garages and limited free parking on some metered streets on Friday, Nov. 24. Shoppers can park at no cost for two hours at the pay-per-space station downtown and at several meters near South Oak Park Ave. Free parking in public garages and free two-hour parking at select meters will continue every Saturday through Dec. 25.
