The Orland Park Public Library invites the community to get creative at its upcoming Community Art Jam on Saturday, May 30 at 2 p.m. This all-ages event offers a unique opportunity for participants to collaborate on a shared work of art while learning from a professional comic artist and children’s book creator.
Led by local artist and author Justin Castaneda, the program will guide attendees through drawing tips and techniques before bringing everyone together to contribute to a one-of-a-kind community art piece. All ages and skill levels are welcome, making it an ideal event for families, aspiring artists, and anyone looking to explore their creativity in a welcoming environment.
"We're so lucky to have an artist of Justin's caliber right here in our community,” said Adult Services Manager Katie Gardner. “We thought this would be a fun opportunity for Justin to lead artists of all ages in creating something together."
Castaneda is known for his work across comics and children’s publishing, including his creator-owned titles The Murder Balloon, Juju’s World of Play, and the children’s book HEART. He is also the co-creator of the all-ages comic series Wonder Care Presents: The Kinder Guardians. His professional credits include work on titles such as Aw Yeah Comics, Scratch 9, and Deadman Tells The Spooky Tales for DC Comics. In addition, his artwork has been featured in several pop culture art book collections, including The Thing Artbook and Ghostbusters Artbook.
Throughout his career, Castaneda has remained committed to community engagement and literacy initiatives, including his work with the Chicago Public Library and participation in projects designed to expand access to creative storytelling.
Community Art Jam is free to attend. Registration is not required.
