ORLAND PARK, IL — The Centennial Park Aquatic Center is closed to the public after two recent cases of Escherichia coli (E. coli) infection were linked to the facility, the Orland Recreation Department said Saturday.
Water sampling consistently demonstrates normal recreational water guidelines; however, the confirmed illnesses prompted the precautionary closure while officials investigate and continue testing, the department said.
E. coli are bacteria found in the intestines of humans and warm-blooded animals and are often found in recreational waters, staff said. Most strains of E. coli are harmless, but some can cause mild to severe illness. Higher bacterial levels increase the risk of infection. Elevated counts can follow heavy rainfall, swimmer contamination, or wildlife waste entering the water.
“The Orland Park Recreation and Park staff will continue to sample the aquatic center and will keep the facility closed until the site is cleared to reopen,” the department said.
The facility had just opened for the season on May 23.
