D135 Rebrands Special Education Program to Emphasize Student Potential

Orland School District 135 updated the identity of one of its core special education programs ahead of the 2026–27 school year, replacing long-standing traditional phrasing with language centered on student growth.

The program formerly referred to as "self-contained special education" will officially be known as S.A.I.L., an acronym standing for Specialized Academic Instruction and Learning.

District administrators initiated the change after determining that legacy terms like "self-contained" failed to accurately represent the daily work happening in classrooms across the district.

In a message sent to families, Dr. Kimberly Wisinski, Assistant Superintendent of Student Services, explained that the updated terminology is designed to better capture the individualized nature, meaningful learning, and overall potential of the students enrolled in the program.

"The intent of this program name change is to better reflect our commitment to an inclusive, strengths-focused framework for all students," Wisinski noted.

District officials emphasized that while the name is changing, day-to-day operations and student accommodations will not be affected.

What Families Need to Know:

• Services Remain Intact: The renaming has no impact on current student services, classroom setups, or support levels.
• IEP Process Unchanged: Individualized Education Program (IEP) decision-making remains strictly governed by federal guidelines under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
• Team-Based Decisions: Placement and service decisions will continue to be made on an individual basis by each student's dedicated IEP team.
