The Best High-Performing, High-Poverty Schools in Illinois

Illinois Honor Roll awarded 37 schools for their academic performance despite the overwhelming odds.

School funding reform has moved its way up Illinois’ to-do list in recent months. Legislation before the General Assembly would divert more state resources to low-income school districts by cutting funding for wealthier suburban districts.

Despite the fact it’s harder for low-income students in poorer districts to achieve academically given their situation, some public schools are doing just that. They won the Illinois Spotlight Schools award for the 2013-14 academic year.

Here are the suburban, downstate and Chicago schools that made the cut.
