Boys Volleyball: Sandburg Shows Stagg Who's the 1

Top-rated Eagles sweep past districl rival 25-6, 25-14.

Sandburg's boys volleyball team has been ranked No. 1 by multiple publications, including The Chicago Sun-Times, and on Monday night at home the Eagles cruised past Stagg in straight sets.

Sandburg built a 14-1 lead in Game 1 before Stagg scratched out another point. Ken Payonk had all four of his kills in the first game, leading the Eagles to a 25-6 victory.

The Eagles (12-2) and Chargers (3-11) were even in the early going of Game 2. Then,  Sandburg bolted to a 20-11 lead and never looked back en route to a 25-14 victory.

The Eagles were led by Bill Siroky's 11 kills and Nick Bendell's 25 assists. Payonk had a service ace in addition to his four kills. The Chargers were led by Jordan Joseph's six kills.

"We had a full team effort," Sandburg coach Sean Airola said. "Everyone performed well, and a few of my juniors surprised me today."

Stagg coach Shannon Sisk was happy with her team's performance despite the outcome.

"Jordan Joseph kept us in the game," she said. "He had some real strong swings and was very aggressive at the net. Our team's passing has been strong, and we were able to run some good plays because of that passing. It was a good match for us."
